Have you taken out a loan, mortgage, credit card, store card or have you bought something on finance? Then it is very likely that you were sold Payment Protection Insurance (PPI). PPI is an insurance which covers your repayments if you are unable to work due to an accident, sickness or unemployment.
PPI is often 'mis-sold' and customers are pressurised into taking out a policy when in fact it is a worthless product as they are unable to make a claim due to exclusion clauses in the small print. Customers may have been told PPI was compulsory or it may have been added without permission or knowledge. In these circumstances all payments maybe recovered along with interest.
The mis-selling of PPI is very common as many sales advisors are pressurised into meeting sales targets and thus fail to check properly whether the product is of use to the customer. It is estimated that approximately half of all PPI policies are worthless.
There are a few broad categories why PPI may have been mis-sold to you:
- Medical: If you had a pre-existing medical condition then you would usually be exempt from making a claim on the policy;
- Employment: Only those in full-time employment are usually covered therefore if you were self-employed, worked part-time, a contract worker, a housewife, or a student then you would usually be exempt from making a claim on the policy;
- Existing Cover: If you already had PPI cover elsewhere or you were entitled to full sick pay from your employer then you would usually be exempt from making a claim on the policy.
If you have been mis-sold one of these policies you may be able to reclaim all your money back plus interest on your money. Many people have been successful in recovering thousands of pounds of their money back, so it is certainly worth discussing matters for a few minutes just to see if you have any chance of being successful – after all you have nothing to lose!
